The Sassanian Emperor Khusrau II removed the True Cross from Jerusalem as a trophy after he captured the city in 614 AD.
In 629 AD Emperor Heraclius of Constantinople marched into Persia and recaptured the True Cross.
He piously brought it back to Jerusalem in sackcloth of penance and barefoot.
